The position has the rank and status of an ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary and is currently held by Tegan Brink since 28 January 2023.

The high commission also has oversight for Honorary Consulates in Luanda, Angola, and Maputo, Mozambique.

Between 1961 and 1994 the designation of the Australian representative in South Africa changed from high commissioner to ambassador.
