Falkirk lost to FC Vaduz of Liechtenstein in the second qualifying round 2–1 on aggregate after extra time.
The Scottish Premier League was being expanded to 12 teams so Falkirk was due to play a two-legged play-off with Aberdeen.
However, Falkirk's Brockville Park did not meet the SPL's new 10,000 all-seater stadium criteria so the match never happened.
After finishing 9th, Falkirk was due to be relegated to the Second Division but was spared because of the demise of Airdrieonians.
Brockville Park still did not meet the SPL's 10,000 all-seater stadium criteria so Falkirk was denied promotion.
