[1] India consists of twenty-eight states and eight union territories.

An Urban Agglomeration must consist of at least a statutory town and its total population should not be less than 20,000 as per the 2001 Census.

As per the 2023 report, there were 65 urban areas with more than one million inhabitants in India.
