World War II: The Type VIIC submarine was depth charged and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, United States (34°50′N 74°55′W / 34.833°N 74.917°W / 34.833; -74.917) by a Lockheed Hudson aircraft of the 396th Bomb Squadron, United States Army Air Force with the loss of 39 of her 46 crew.
Survivors were rescued by a Hall PH-2 aircraft of the United States Navy.
