The Balao-class submarine sank at pier eight, Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts without loss of life.

The immediate cause of sinking was the opening of the breech door of a torpedo tube while the outer door was open and the interlock system was not operating.

She was raised on 23 March but was decommissioned the next day, subsequently being allocated in uncompleted condition to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet.

She was never completed and was finally scrapped in 1959.
