The submarine rescue vessel was driven ashore in a typhoon at Tsingtao, China.

She was later refloated and returned to service.

World War II: The Courageous-class aircraft carrier (22,500/26,990 t, 1916/1928) was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Ireland (50°10′N 14°45′W / 50.167°N 14.750°W / 50.167; -14.750) by U-29 ( Kriegsmarine) with the loss of 518 of her 1,259 crew.
