Local roads in Ireland

Local roads vary greatly in quality, from wide urban streets to very narrow, rural lanes, known as boreens in Ireland.

Up until 7 February 2025, local roads were subject to a general speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour (km/h) or 50 km/h in built-up areas.

Local road numbers have been used for administrative purposes since the Act came into effect, but local road numbers did not generally appear on directional signposts until the late 2000s.

Local roads are divided into segments of two to three kilometres maximum.
