[3][5] He studied at Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) between 2007 and 2010,[6] playing under Guthrie Govan[3] and with the likes of Jeff Beck,[7][8] Francis Dunnery,[9] Pain of Salvation[10] and Robert Plant, by the age of 22.

[2] Around this time Machin auditioned for Pain of Salvation but didn't take the role due to his commitment to Maschine and geographical issues,[2] though he did guest with the band in 2012.
