Lump (dog)

Lump (1956 – 29 March 1973), was a Dachshund owned by David Douglas Duncan who lived with artist Pablo Picasso for six years, and featured in several of his works.

Born in Stuttgart, Germany, and named after the German word for "rascal", the dog was acquired by David Douglas Duncan, an American photographer.

[1] Lump was purchased at the age of three months from a German family in order to act as a companion for Duncan's Afghan Hound, Kubla.

[2] Duncan sought a second opinion, taking back the dog, he drove it to Stuttgart, Germany, where he found a vet who was willing to treat Lump.

The treatment took several months, but Lump would go on to live for another ten years, albeit walking as Duncan would describe "a bit like a drunken sailor".

[2] The painted plate that Picasso created on their first meeting was donated to the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin by Duncan in 2011.
