Standing at 6 ft 5.5 in (1.97 m), he played at the point guard position While player, he was in the VEF Rīga roster when the now 10-time Latvian champs got its first title in 2011.

At the age of 20 he but put the end to his player career because of the health reasons and became the youngest head coach in Latvian Basketball League history.

[citation needed] In 2020 Gulbis switched his career to women's club basketball when he was appointed the head coach of the legendary Latvian team TTT Rīga.
