It houses the famous Sri Meenakshi Sundareshwarar temple and is situated on the banks of the river Vaigai.
Aside from the city of Madurai, the larger towns are Melur, Vadipatti, Thirumangalam, Thirupparankundram, Peraiyur, and Usilampatti.
