The station opened in January 1908 as part of the Eastern Line Bangkok–Chachoengsao Junction section.
It is the location of the Makkasan Depot, which opened in 1897 when the railway started operations.
Despite not having official status as a junction, a freight-only branch line to Mae Nam station, Bangkok Port, and the Bang Chak Oil Refinery branches off from here.
Furthermore, the Airport Rail Link does not stop at this station, although it does pass through its own elevated viaduct running parallel to the SRT Eastern Line.
The closest stations to the Airport Rail Link are at Phaya Thai and Asok Halt.
