Unlike in Peninsular Malaysia, the Indian population in Sarawak is small.
Estimated to be between 6,500 people (figure also includes those of mixed parentage and professionals/students/residents from other parts of Malaysia as well as direct migrants from India), found mainly in the urban exteriors of Kuching and Miri.
There are also other minorities from the Punjabi Sikhs, Telugus, Sindhis and Malayali ethnic groups.
[2] A significant portion of the contemporary South Asian community in Sarawak consists of individuals from mixed marriages with Malays, Chinese and various indigenous ethnic groups.
Many Sarawak Indians have pursued successful careers in professions such as medicine, law, engineering, education, and other professional fields, both within the government and private sectors.
