A district head (camat) is appointed directly by the regent with recommendation from the regency secretary.
In addition, one of two regency's only tertiary education institution, Malinau Polytechnic, is located in the district.
The main market buildings are located in Malinau Kota and Pelita Kanaan.
The road within the district are sealed with asphalt and considered passable during all weather year long as of 2021.
