Matthew Stephen Klimow[2][3] (born June 10, 1952)[4] is an American diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to Turkmenistan.
On August 31, 2020, Klimow assumed office as the acting Inspector General of the Department of State and left on December 11.
He received a Masters of Military Art and Science from the School of Advanced Military Studies at the United States Army Command and General Staff College in 1989 with a thesis entitled Surrender - a soldier's legal, ethical, and moral obligations; with Philippine case study.
[3][8] Other assignments include Brigade Commander in the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, from 1998 to 2000, Military Advisor to the Secretary of State and Special Assistant, Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1995 to 1998 and Visiting Defense Fellow at the Center for International Relations, Queen's University, Canada from 1994 to 1995.
[9] From 2012 to 2015, Klimow served as a Deputy Assistant Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Brussels, Belgium.
