The Metsimaholo Local Municipality council consists of forty-six members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) formed a coalition with the African National Congress (ANC).
Shortly after, the EFF ordered the mayor to stand down, as the party rejected working with the ANC.
[5] The municipal council failed to adopt a budget for the 2017/18 financial year because of disagreements between the coalition members.
[6] As a result the council was dissolved in July 2017 and an administrator appointed by the provincial government.
