This movement gained momentum in 1902 AD when Sir George Grierson, an official of the British Indian government, prepared a map of Mithila state by conducting a language-based survey.
[9] In 2003, when the Maithili language was included in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government, the then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had asked to Dr Baidyanath Chaudhary, the president of the organisation Akhil Bhartiya Mithila Rajya Sangharsh Samiti, whether Hanuman will not ask for Mithila state now.
In 2007 he started a signature campaign to demand the creation of a separate state of Mithila for the people who speak Maithili.
He said, "We will collect signatures of 10 million people in support of the demand for creation of a separate state of Mithila and submit it to the President of India".
[12] On 20 August 2010, Maithil people in the aegis of Mithila Rajya Sangharsh Samiti led by Dr Baidyanath Chaudhary staged a strike at the premises of Jantar Mantar in the national capital New Delhi.
After the strike, they submitted a memorandum in the name of the then prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh for the demand of the formation of separate Mithila state.
[13] On 26 May 2012, Dr Dhanakar Thakur, the founder president of the Antrashtria Maithili Parishad said in a press release that in order to stop the Mithila state formation, an attempt was being made to divide Mithila under a conspiracy by giving names like Kosi, Seemanchal to its different regions.

He raised this issue in the Parliament of India to fulfil the old dream of a separate Mithila state for Maithils in North Bihar.
The issue was raised after the demand of legal sanctity for the use of Maithili language in official works of the Bihar government by the then BJP MLC Suman Kumar's non-government resolution at the council.
Also, permanent solution to floods by building dams in Nepal, AIIMS, IIT, IIM, Doordarshan in Maithili, establishment of IT park, establishment of High Court bench, prevention of migration and unemployment and creation of Mithila Regiment in the Army are prominent.
They have started a movement for the separate Mithila state in India from the present Bihar on social media and mass contact campaigns.
The organisation had planned a huge public protest on 21 August 2022 at Jantar Mantar in the national capital of India in New Delhi.
Several political figures were also seen at the protest, in which Aam Aadmi Party MLA Rituraj Jha and former MP Mahabal Mishra were prominent.
The volunteers of the Mithila Students Union (MSU) took out a march to Raj Bhavan in Bihar capital.
The march was called off after the administration took a five-member delegation of the organisation to the Raj Bhavan, which submitted a memorandum to the officials present there.
MSU president Amit Kumar Thakur said to media “We have submitted a memorandum at the Raj Bhavan so that our demand could reach the Centre and appropriate action is taken."
It has been neglected by the ruling parties since Independence,” Another leader Vidya Bhushan Rai told to online edition of The Telegraph that the economy, industries, agriculture, tourism, and education of Mithila region had been exploited and destroyed by the Bihar government.

National Spokesperson cum Media Incharge Sushil Kumar Jha of the organisation said "We want a Mithila state.
Similarly with the formation of Mithila state, all facilities like health, education, transportation and roads will start in the region".
She raised the demand of separate Mithila state at Bihar Legislative Council during the discussion on Maithili language in the House.
Similarly the former director Dr Diwakar of A N Sinha Institute of Social Sciences at Patna said "We need good education and relief from floods.
[38] On 1 December 2024, the Congress leader Jyoti Jha from Madhepura said in a press release "The demand for a separate Mithila state will prove to be a boon for the future generation.
[39] On 11 February 2025, Akhil Bhartiya Mithila Rajya Sangharsh Samiti demonstrated a one-day protest at the premises of the Jantar Mantar in the national capital New Delhi in the favour of the demand for creation of the separate Mithila state carving from the present state of Bihar in India.
In the protest thousands of Maithil people participated to strengthen the demand of the creation of separate Mithila state.
