A member of the royal family, he was the son of Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani.
Al Thani served as Ambassador to Lebanon from 1973 to 1977, before becoming Minister for Education in 1978.
Al Thani went into exile in 1995 after Hamad bin Khalifa's coup to join his brother, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, in United Arab Emirates.
