Anciently Moydow barony was part of a territory known as Tethbae.
The barony was formed from the territories of Clanawlye (Ardagh & Moydow), and parts of the territories of Moybrawne (Taghshinny parish), Clanconnor (part Kilcommock, part Cashel parishes) and Muintergalgan.
