It is also the name of an official Gaeltacht region in which Munster Irish is spoken.
Gaeltacht villages include Béal Átha an Ghaorthaidh, Baile Bhuirne, Cúil Aodha and Cill na Martra.
Major population centres include Ballincollig, Blarney and Macroom.
