Myōkō, Niigata

Myōkō is a member of the World Health Organization’s Alliance for Healthy Cities (AFHC).

Myōkō has a Humid climate (Köppen Cfa) characterized by warm, wet summers and cold winters with heavy snowfall.

During the Edo period the area was divided between the holdings of Takada Domain and tenryō territory administered directly by the Tokugawa shogunate.

With the creation of the modern municipalities system on June 26, 1890, the village of Arai was created within Nakakubiki District, Niigata.

Myōkō has a mayor-council form of government with a directly elected mayor and a unicameral city legislature of 18 members.

In terms of national politics, the city is part of Niigata 6th district of the lower house of the Diet of Japan.
