Northland Transportation Company operated cargo and passenger ships from Seattle to Southeast Alaska starting in 1923.
[3] Alaska ports served: Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Juneau, Haines, Skagway and Sitka.
Northland Transportation Company opened a terminal at pier 42 in South Seattle.
The other Alaska Steamship Companies did not survive due to rising labor costs, the end of federal subsidies and from new competition from trucking and air carriers.
The most common armament mounted on these merchant ships were the MK II 20mm Oerlikon autocannon and the 3"/50, 4"/50, and 5"/38 deck guns.
