Old Church of Siġġiewi

The building was abandoned and partially demolished after a new parish church with the same dedication was built elsewhere in the village in the late 17th century.

[2] During a 1575 visit, Pietro Dusina mentioned that the church had two lateral altars, two small naves, a sacristy and a baptistery near the main door.

It was enlarged further in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, and by this point the church acquired a cruciform plan.

[3] The old church was abandoned, and in the late 17th century Bishop Davide Cocco Palmieri ordered its demolition.

[6] A stone cross known as is-Salib tad-Dejma was built nearby, probably to mark the location of the former church,[7] and a niche with a relief of Saint Mary and souls was installed above a doorway leading to the ruins.

[4][12] The project was awarded a Silver Medal Trophy and Prix d'Honneur for restoration and conservation by Din l-Art Ħelwa in 2008.
