It used to be the main church for the Nærbø parish which is part of the Jæren prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Stavanger.
In the early 1830s, it was decided that both old church es should be torn down and the two parishes would be merged.
The new parish was a combination of Njærheim and Bø and would be called Nærbø.
[4][5][6] Over time, the church became too small for the growing community.
In 2005, a "new" Nærbø Church was built in a more central part of the village.
