[1] The first school in Storm Lake was completed in 1869 on the same site as this building.

That building soon became inadequate and a wood-frame structure was built behind it to house grades 7–9.

The wooden building was much maligned and a study was undertaken by the school district to determine what to do.

It was decided to build a new high school on the same site and it was completed in 1929.
