It is located to the east of the River Clyde, about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Wishaw.

Overtown also has a community centre, a parish Church which serves as a focal point for the community and a small number of independent shops and takeaway restaurants.

It is located on the edge of the Clyde Valley, and is only 1 mile (1.6 kilometres) away from Garrion Bridge.

The West Coast Main Line also passes through the village, but no passenger service trains stop there.
