Parkan (castle)

The Fort of Parkan (full name Ciğerdelen Parkan meaning "liver-stabbing fort", also called Çekerden) was a fortified outpost built by the Ottoman Empire in 1546 as part of the defense system of Esztergom.

The fort was located on the territory of present-day Štúrovo, Slovakia.

The crossing of the Danube near the mouth of the river Hron already had a strategic role in Roman times when probably a small fort was built in this area.

Later there was an important medieval village first mentioned in written rekord in 1075 as Kokot.

[2] The Ottomans built a small fortress (parkan) west of the site of the destroyed village as part of the defense system of Esztergom in 1546.
