Polygala virgata

Polygala virgata is a species of flowering plant in the milkwort family (Polygalaceae) native to eastern and southern Africa.

[3] It is an erect, evergreen shrub that normally reaches 1–3 m in height with a single stem formed at the base and slender hairless branches at the top.

The showy flowers are 12–15 mm in length, purple to light lilac in colour, which occur from late winter to spring.

[4] The flowers look similar to that of a pea family, though are different – The purple tuft of hairs is a typical feature to identify all polygalas.

In the rest of Africa, the tree is native to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
