Procatopodinae is a subfamily of the family Poeciliidae, the "livebearers", in the order Cyprinodontiformes.
[2] Some authorities treat this subfamily as a family, the Procatopodidae, including the banded lampeye.
[3] The subfamily Procatopodinae is divided into two tribes and 11 genera:[2] The extinct procatopodine Paralebias Gaudant, 2013 is known from the Oligocene and Miocene of Europe.
