The species was first described by Hamilton Herbert Druce in 1888.

It is found in Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon, Angola, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania.
