Land at the former Hendon Aerodrome in Colindale, London, was leased from the Ministry of Defence and the museum was opened there by Queen Elizabeth II in 1972.
The museum was part of the Ministry of Defence until 1984, when it was split off and became a non-departmental public body.
[3] The current governing document of the museum is a Royal charter granted in 2021.
[4] In the financial year ending 2023, the museum had an income of £19.8 million.
It had 202 employees, assisted by 384 volunteers, and is governed by a group of 11 trustees.
