It was founded by Rai Kedar Nath with the aim of 'providing elite higher education to the masses to make them capable of standing on their own feet' in 1917[citation needed], and is characterised by its political volatility & has a long legacy of student struggles & frequent cases of campus violence.
[3] Ramjas is one of four founding colleges of the University of Delhi, alongside Hindu, St. Stephen's, and Zakir Husain.
According to its website, Nath, the college's founder, also played a significant role in the naming of Delhi University.
[4] Founded on 17 January 1917 by the educationist and philanthropist, Rai Kedar Nath, the college was named in memory of his father, Lala Ramjas.
[citation needed] When the University of Delhi was formed in 1922, Ramjas was upgraded to the degree level and brought under its aegis.
[citation needed] But during World War II, the college had to cede its campus at Anand Parbat to the British Wireless Experimental Centre.
[8] In the same period, at time of Quit India Movement, a group of Ramjas students went ahead and joined the freedom struggle which resulted in them being arrested and jailed.
[8] On 12 February 1959, The famous black American leader Martin Luther King Jr. visited the college and made a memorable speech to the students.
[10] In 2017 India Post issued a postage stamp to commemorate the Centenary Year of Ramjas college Delhi.
[12] Several renowned figures such as Rajyavardhan Rathore, Gen. Manoj Naravane, Bibek Debroy, and others participated in this literary exercise.
