Rattota is situated between northern latitudes 7.25-7.33 and Eastern longitudes 80.36-80.45 and 300–1,520 m (1,000–5,000 ft) high from the sea level.
The division has a total area of 104.88 km2 (40.49 sq mi).
When Sri Lanka became a colony in 1815, Rattota had been included to Kandy Udarata regime.
After gaining the independence from Britain in 1948, Matale district was divided in to three revenue divisions and Rattota was the southern part of it.
