The American Hockey League established a trophy, the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award, in 1947 for the best rookie of the year in his honour.
Garrett originally was the property of the Toronto Maple Leafs, however, he was traded in 1942 along with Hank Goldup to the Rangers for future Hart Trophy recipient, Babe Pratt.
Able seaman Garrett died in action during the Second World War while serving on the Flower-class corvette HMCS Shawinigan.
[1] During the Battle of the St. Lawrence, while on a convoy escort mission in the Cabot Strait, his ship was torpedoed by German submarine U-1228, and sank in four minutes on the night of 24 November 1944.
