[2] Suhrheinrich was nominated by President George H. W. Bush on April 18, 1990, to a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit vacated by Judge Albert J. Engel Jr.

He assumed senior status on August 15, 2001, and was succeeded by Judge David McKeague.
