Sands played college football for the West Virginia Mountaineers.

On December 4, 2011, Sands made his debut against the Pittsburgh Steelers but did not record any stats.

On January 29, 2016, Sands signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.

On November 13, 2018, Sands signed with the West Virginia Roughriders of the American Arena League.
