[1] The family name is derived from the generic name of the type genus, Nolina.

[2] A possibly incomplete list of the genera included in the Nolinoideae is given below.

[2][3][4] Calibanus was a former genus that was placed in the Nolinoideae subfamily when the APG III system was introduced.

[1][5] Both members of the genus have since been transferred to the genus Beaucarnea (also a member of the Nolinoideae) after molecular phylogenetic research demonstrated a strong phylogenetic relationship with species of Beaucarnea.
