Sándor Svéd

Sándor Svéd (28 May 1906, Budapest — 9 June 1979), also known as Alexander Sved in the United States, was a Hungarian baritone who had an active international career in operas and concerts from 1928 until his retirement from the stage in 1958.

[3] Svéd made his professional debut at the Hungarian State Opera House in 1928 as the Count di Luna in Giuseppe Verdi's Il trovatore.

[2] From 1935 through 1939 he was a resident artist at the Vienna State Opera under Bruno Walter where he achieved an international reputation for heroic roles in the Italian repertory; including the part of the Marquis of Posa in Don Carlo.

[2] Outside of the Italian repertory, he also appeared in Vienna as Escamillo in Carmen, Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Lysiart in Euryanthe, Wolfram in Tannhäuser, and the title role in Eugene Onegin.

[2] On December 2, 1940, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera ("the Met") in New York City using the name Alexander Sved as Renato in Un ballo in maschera.
