It is one of the four churches for the Gaular parish which is part of the Sunnfjord prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin.
[1][2] The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1327, but it was not new at that time.
Each church parish was a constituency that elected people called "electors" who later met together in each county to elect the representatives for the assembly that was to meet in Eidsvoll later that year.
The new church was designed by Hans Linstow and it was built during 1864 and consecrated on 5 December 1864.
Originally, the choir was in the same room as the nave, giving the church a rectangular design.
