Schizachyrium is a widespread genus of plants in the grass family.
[4] The name is derived from the Ancient Greek words σχίζειν (schizein), meaning "to split," and ἄχυρον (achyron), meaning "chaff."
It refers to either the glume or the toothed lemmas.
