The genus Schizosaccharomyces is a broad and ancient clade within Ascomycota including five known fission yeast: Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Schizosaccharomyces japonicius, Schizosaccharomyces octosporus, and Schizosaccharomyces cryophilus, and Schizosaccharomyces osmophilus.
