The first two names stem from a spring at the site of the early community.
Due to Hurricane Irene in August 2011 the Village experienced a flood which inundated large portions of the Village with up to 7 feet of water.
The Lasell Hall, Old Lutheran Parsonage, Old Stone Fort, St. Paul's Lutheran Church Historic District, Schoharie County Courthouse Complex, and Schoharie Valley Railroad Complex are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
[4] According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2).
As of the census[6] of 2000, there were 1,030 people, 448 households, and 254 families residing in the village.
37.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 23.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
