Shabestar (Persian: شبستر)[a] is a city in the Central District of Shabestar County, East Azerbaijan province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district.

[4] Shabstar, with an altitude of 1,400 meters, is located in the southern foothills of Mishudagh, 575 km northwest of Tehran and 54 km northwest of Tabriz, on the road from Tabriz to Khuy, Selmas, Urumiye, Ushnawiye and Piranshahr.

Shabestar's economy and development has received a major boost due to the 'Azad' university [1] built there.
