According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 225.59 square miles (584.28 km2), of which 224.84 square miles (582.33 km2) is land and 0.75 square miles (1.94 km2) (0.33%) is water.

It is the westernmost municipality in the United States to be in the Eastern Time Zone.

The township contains a substantial shoreline on Lake Superior.
