The primary settlement is the unincorporated community of East Smithfield, located near the center of the township.

The racial makeup of the township was 98.83% White, 0.91% African American, 0.13% Asian, and 0.13% from two or more races.

There were 567 households, out of which 32.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.6% were married couples living together, 4.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.5% were non-families.
