Other cities in Turkistan include Sayram, Kentau, Arys, Shardara, Zhetisai, Saryagash, and Lenger.

The Syr Darya passes through the region, on its way to the Aral Sea.

The Region was created as South Kazakhstan Oblast in Kazakh SSR of Soviet Union.
