[2][3][4] Special Olympics is an international nonprofit organisation dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to become fit, productive and respected members of the society through sports training and competition.

Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition to 2.5 million adults and children with intellectual disabilities across 180 countries.

The organization now has over 28,500 registered athletes, over 750 coaches and over 3,000 volunteers with more than 320 competitions held by 2018.
