[1] Barnes got his first college head coaching job at San Jose State on August 27, 1999.

[5] On May 1, 2003, Iowa State suspended Barnes for alleged threats against administrators in response to a suspension of Eustachy.

In 2012, Barnes followed Eustachy to Colorado State and started as director of player personnel for a year before moving up to full-time assistant coach in 2013.

[3] On February 3, 2018, Colorado State promoted Barnes to interim head coach after placing regular head coach Larry Eustachy on leave pending an investigation into Eustachy's behavior.
