Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises over 3,900 feet (1,200 meters) above the Big Thompson River in Forest Canyon in two miles.
The peak is a prominent landmark viewed from Forest Canyon Overlook along the Trail Ridge Road.
The peak's namesake is glacial geologist George Hapgood Stone (1841–1917), a professor at Colorado College (1881–1888) who visited this area in 1886.
[2] The mountain's toponym was officially adopted in 1932 by the United States Board on Geographic Names.
[9] Due to its altitude, it receives precipitation all year, as snow in winter and as thunderstorms in summer, with a dry period in late spring.
