The Town of Sumpter is located in Sauk County, Wisconsin, United States.
The town was once called "Kingston," and this name conflicted with a same-named community in the state.
At the start of the Civil War, the name was changed to "Sumter," in commemoration of the Battle of Fort Sumter, but an error in spelling on an early map resulted in the current name.
26.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
